What does it mean learn how to own your space?
Today you need to think differently about who you are and what your role is in where you are. What does it mean to own your space?
When it comes to leadership, I have been on both sides of the coin. I have been led, and I have lead people. A lot of people think they need to be in a big position to be called relevant to lead. Leadership has nothing to do with how big the position is. As little as a group of three people is a big role to play.
What if you are alone? It means you must lead yourself. Self-leadership is a great skill you need to be relevant.
One of the big steps to become a great leader is the ability to lead yourself. Self-leadership is the number one trait that distinguishes great leaders with influence and a mere leader without influence.
If you can lead yourself you can lead others. I learnt that during my undergraduate days. So, if you want to lead yourself, it begins by owning your space.
So, how do you own your space?
Start where you are.
Where you are in is your personal kingdom and you are its king or queen. Leadership starts with taking responsibility, and taking responsibility is owning your space. So, take charge of your space. Whoever you are, or where you are placed, take the lead. It doesn’t matter what position you are in or how many persons you have around you, take the lead. If you can do this, it gives you a sense of responsibility and you achieve more while you are there.
You are the CEO of your life. You are in charge and your life will go as you direct it to be. Your life is only a reflection of how you think it to be.
Grow your space.
While you are taking the lead, learn to grow. Don’t just own your space, grow your space. Grow your influence. That is why you need to grow in knowledge and wisdom. The more you grow in knowledge the more the capacity for increase you have.
Readers are leaders, right? It is the knowledge you have that empowers you. Read about what is around you and gather information quickly. But most importantly get self-knowledge.
”Knowing others is intelligence. Knowing yourself is wisdom. Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is absolute power.” Lao Tzu
Self-mastery requires high-level knowledge of self. Therefore, you need to grow spiritually, physically, and mentally. It means you are responsible for your growth and personal development.
If you grow within, you grow without.
Do more than necessary
If knowledge is power, applied knowledge is a superpower. Knowing is not enough, do. The more you do with what you have, the more you rule. Applied knowledge is key in owning your space. Make use of what you have. Also, utilise the little knowledge you have. Take charge of the available space you’re in to grow.
You don’t need to have it all figure out before you act. Act anyway.
The people who achieve more are action takers. Action makes you grow. When you act on what you know, that is when you learn more than what you know. When you act, you learn. That is how the masters operate. They have taken massive actions, and they have learnt every mistake possible in their field. That’s what makes them dominate their kingdom.
Be a giver
Give some, sell some. The more you give the more you grow. If you don’t share what you have you lose out more. Share your stuff. Share your knowledge.
A percentage of what you have is for you to give it away. The rest is yours to keep or sell. Yes. Sell it. What makes your stuff valuable is how much people are willing to pay for it. One of the secrets of great salesmen is they give freebies to attract sales. They give first and they sell after.
I learnt this late. I used to feel bad about selling. But I learnt that selling is actually sharing.
You need to ask yourself if you are growing or stagnant. If you are not growing you need to evaluate what is not working and remove what doesn’t work. Whoever is not contributing anything meaning in your life you cut them out.
Ask yourself, ”Who are the people you surround yourself with?”
To grow you must surround yourself with those who will help you to grow. Attitudes and mindsets can be magnetic. You become like the people you surround yourself with.
